The Legendary Anime Ends a 27-Year Era in 2026

This marks the conclusion of an iconic period for long-running series, with Toei Animation revealing a revised release plan for One Piece, which has run continuously for more than 25 years and included dozens of filler arcs. Starting in the new year, after the current storyline wraps up, the anime will go on a three-month hiatus until April, when the next major arc kicks off.

Updated Production Plan

From now on, One Piece will release a pair of cours every year for a cap of two dozen installments. The studio states this will enable the anime to “dive even deeper into the heart of the ONE PIECE world — incorporating more content, tempo, and timing of the source material.” Yet, producers end by promising “thrilling developments” during the series' break, which means additional One Piece content, such as the upcoming live-action adaptation, set to premiere during this gap.

Learning from Past Breaks

The One Piece anime previously took a six-month pause that started in October 2024 and ended in early 2025. The hiatus was for the production team to improve the animation quality and allow the comic to build a lead to prevent a rushed adaptation and lengthy recap episodes. The show greatly benefited from this respite, and it has been able to deliver viewers with numerous action sequences, high-quality animation, and less filler than ever before.

Adopting Modern Trends

Although a few summary installments appeared during this season, the benefits of this new production schedule greatly outweigh the occasional interruption in the story. This also gives the original work, which is presently in the middle of the latest arc, to extend its lead on the adaptation. According to the news, this may result in one episode of the series adapting a single manga chapter, with others alternatively covering more material or more to make up for scheduling.

This concludes of an era for anime, as One Piece is the final major title to abandon the traditional method of production, which focused on airing for most of the calendar. This explains why iconic series such as Naruto, and of course itself have numerous filler arcs, and the standard of the animation can change drastically between installments and the next. Today, anime production is organized in seasons, with one or two at most releasing each year, allowing for better quality and greater accuracy to the source material.
