Pacific Bluefin Fish Sells for Record Sum of 3.2 million dollars at Japanese Capital New Year Sale

A massive Pacific bluefin tuna made headlines at the Tokyo's Toyosu fish market this Monday, garnering a unprecedented bid of 510.3 million yen (3.2 million US dollars; £2.4m) during the market's opening auction of the calendar year.

The top offer for the 535-pound fish was placed by the parent firm of a well-known sushi chain, which manages outlets across the country and internationally.

"The year's tuna signals good luck," stated the entrepreneur, a familiar participant at the traditional January sale.

Known as the Tuna King, this businessman is noted for submitting high bids for bluefin tuna at these auspicious new year auctions.

Auction Shock and Historic Precedent

After the auction, the winner informed journalists that he was "taken aback at the final price," noting, "I had thought we would be able to purchase it a little cheaper, but the price skyrocketed in no time."

This most recent purchase surpasses his previous notable purchases:

• He bid 56.5 million yen back in 2012.
• He spent 155 million yen the following year.
• In 2019, he purchased a tuna for 333.6 million yen (2.1 million dollars).

Despite once commenting that he thought he "did too much," he has now proceeded to shatter his own record yet again.

An Annual Spectacle of High Prices

The inaugural auction at the Tokyo fish market is typically associated with sky-high prices. The previous year, the first tuna was purchased for 207 million yen by a separate food company, which announced the fish would be featured at its eateries throughout the country.

The frenetic activity at the fish market during these pre-dawn auctions has transformed into a major tourist attraction in Tokyo. Monday's auction, which started around 05:00 local time, was no different.
