Harvard ex-president Summers Steps Down from OpenAI Board

Leadership Change
The former official declared he would withdraw from public duties after Congressional panel made public his frequent messages with Epstein

Former US treasury secretary Lawrence Summers is exiting the directorate at the artificial intelligence firm, just several days after a batch of electronic messages between him and late convicted sex offender Jeffrey Epstein became widely known.

Summers stated in an announcement that he was "grateful for the privilege to have participated, optimistic about the prospects of the organization, and anticipate tracking their development".

The former Harvard president, who formerly headed the Ivy League institution, announced on Monday that he would be scaling back from public roles due to his relationship with the convicted sex offender.

Digital Correspondence

The recently released emails demonstrated that the economist exchanged messages with Jeffrey Epstein until the 24 hours preceding the financier's 2019 arrest for accused sex trafficking of young people.

In another announcement, the technology organization expressed it accepted the economist's decision to resign.

"We value his many contributions and the viewpoint he provided to the directors," the organization remarked.

Political Context

This news comes after the two houses of the legislative branch voted on this week to pass a bill that would mandate the Department of Justice to make public its records on Jeffrey Epstein.

The legislation will then head to the desk of President Trump for signature. He has indicated he intends to sign the measure, after changing his stance on the issue following pressure from his followers.

Email Contents

A batch of Epstein-related messages released by the Congressional committee recently referenced several well-known personalities in the billionaire's past associates, without indicating any illegal behavior by those individuals.

The communications revealed that the economist and Epstein regularly had dinners together, with the billionaire often attempting to introduce the academic to prominent world leaders.

Personal Response

After the correspondence were shared with the wider community, he stated he took "full responsibility for my misguided judgment to persist in corresponding with Jeffrey Epstein".

He added that he hoped "to rebuild trust and fix connections with the persons closest to me".

Previous Positions

Summers held leadership roles under Democratic administrations; acting as economic leader under President Clinton, and as head of the White House economic team under Barack Obama.

He presided over the university from the early 2000s and is still a faculty member there. When declaring his step-down from public duties earlier on this week, he stated he would persist with his academic responsibilities.

Other Impacts

Following his announcement on earlier this week, the Center for American Progress, a liberal policy institute in DC where the professor was a senior fellow, announced that he was not affiliated with the organization.

He entered the leadership of OpenAI, which makes the language model, in last year - following a defeated move to replace its CEO Sam Altman.
