Aaron Rai Secures Abu Dhabi HSBC Championship in Dramatic Playoff Showdown Versus Tommy Fleetwood
The 30-year-old golfer displayed exceptional composure to secure the Abu Dhabi HSBC Championship on Sunday, defeating his compatriot in a tense play-off after a topsy-turvy last day of play.
The Englishman sank a crucial birdie putt from around eight foot to seal the victory, echoing his only previous tournament success at the 2020 Scottish Open, which was also a playoff win over Fleetwood.
Final Round Drama
The champion started the final round with a one-shot advantage over fellow Englishman Fleetwood and Danish golfer Højgaard. He ended up with a overall score of twenty-under after a topsy-turvy, five-under closing round that included seven birdie putts and two bogeys.
Fleetwood edged a stroke ahead with two holes remaining after a birdie on the 16th, but his rival pulled level again on the seventeenth and then missed a 10-foot birdie attempt to win outright on the last hole.
Play-Off Climax
That led to a playoff at Yas Links where Rai prevailed to claim the championship and $1.5m (£1.13m) in winnings.

Other Performances
The Northern Irish star left himself a bit too far to do, finishing a stroke short in a tie for third with the Dane, after a spectacular 62 final round of ten-under. It was his lowest-ever round on the DP World Tour, comprising eight birdies and an eagle.
The Danish golfer fired six birdies of his own, but his hopes of topping the standings were dented by a bogey on the 12th. English golfer Richard Mansell produced an excellent last round seven-under to end up tied for fifth with Australian Daniel Hillier.
