No less than 64 individuals lost their lives in a police operation cracking down on the Red Command gang in Rio de Janeiro's north zone - the most extensive and fatal action in the Brazilian state's records.

Fierce clashes commenced when around 2,500 law enforcement officers moved in on Tuesday early hours. The criminal organization reacted using gunfire, burning barricades and using drone-dropped explosives, police representatives stated.

The International human rights organization expressed being "horrified" by the police operation, demanding "immediate and thorough inquiries".

Operation Impact

The slum neighborhoods adjacent to the aerial transportation hub is considered to be the main base of one of Brazil's most powerful organised crime groups.

Government representatives confirmed no less than 50 of those killed were "indicated by police as suspected of being criminals".

Many residents were wounded, including non-combatants affected by the violence.

Resident Accounts

Locals have likened the hillside area - inhabited by approximately 300,000 individuals - to a "battlefield" since the operation began.

Transport routes stay blocked across the area.

Organized Crime Spread

The criminal network has been increasing their control throughout the region, increasing drug trafficking routes and power in the informal settlements.

Local law enforcement said more than 200kg (441lb) of narcotics were captured in the mission, together with multiple guns.

Raid Preparation

The coordinated mission by various security forces follows a year-long investigation.

Many of the individuals are believed to be participants in an organization from the northern region who are at the moment taking refuge in the city.

Broader Context

Extensive security missions are frequent in Brazil ahead of major international events in the nation.

The international environmental meeting COP30 is scheduled in the city of Belem in the north in late autumn.
